RICARDO RIOJA BUENFIL

Advanced 3D Animation and 3D Modelling - 2025

What brought you to KPU and your program of study?

I chose KPU ENTA because I wanted a program that closely reflected the realities of the VFX and animation industry. Coming from Mexico, my goal was to develop strong artistic and technical skills while learning from industry professionals. The 3D program stood out because of its hands on approach, collaborative environment, and focus on building a professional portfolio. It gave me the opportunity to grow as an artist, challenge myself creatively, and prepare for a career in visual effects.

Can you briefly describe your current position and your main day to day responsibilities?

I currently work as a Texture Artist at Sony Pictures Imageworks. My day to day responsibilities include creating textures and surface details for assets used in films. This involves working closely with supervisors and other departments, interpreting artistic direction, maintaining visual consistency, troubleshooting technical issues, and ensuring assets meet both artistic and production requirements. The role requires a balance of creativity, attention to detail, and collaboration within a large production pipeline.

Which skills, knowledge, or experiences from KPU have been most valuable in your career so far?

One of the most valuable things I gained from KPU was learning how to think like a production artist rather than simply focusing on software. The program emphasized problem solving, collaboration, receiving feedback, and working under deadlines, all of which are essential in a professional studio environment. Building a strong portfolio, participating in critiques, and learning industry workflows helped me transition more confidently into the workforce. The relationships I built with instructors, mentors, and classmates were also incredibly valuable and continue to influence my career today.

What advice would you give current KPU students who want to build a successful career after graduation?

Focus on developing a strong portfolio rather than trying to learn every tool available. Be open to feedback, build meaningful connections with classmates and industry professionals, and stay persistent even when opportunities take time to appear. The industry can be competitive, but continuous improvement, professionalism, and a willingness to learn will help you stand out. Most importantly, create work that genuinely excites you, because passion and dedication are often reflected in the quality of your portfolio.
