What brought you to KPU and your program of study?

My sister, a graduate of KPU's Internationally Educated Nurses Bridging Program, encouraged me to consider nursing. Her positive experience inspired me to enter a profession dedicated to caring for others while creating opportunities for lifelong learning and service. Looking back, that advice changed the course of my life.

As a working mother, my educational journey was not always easy. However, KPU's flexibility and student-centered approach made it possible. In 2006, I participated in a pilot Critical Care Nursing Program developed through a collaboration between KPU, Mount Royal University, and Fraser Health. The program strengthened my clinical knowledge and helped advance my nursing career.

Later, I enrolled in KPU's Diploma-to-Bachelor of Science in Nursing program, which was specifically designed for working Registered Nurses. At the time, I was working full-time as a Registered Nurse while caring for a newborn baby and supporting my family. Balancing work, family, and education was one of the greatest challenges of my life. There were many late nights studying after my baby had fallen asleep and many moments when perseverance was essential. KPU recognized the realities faced by working nurses and created a flexible learning environment that allowed students to continue working full-time while pursuing their degrees. This support enabled me to advance my education without sacrificing my family responsibilities or professional commitments.

Can you briefly describe your current position and your main day to day responsibilities?

Today, I have more than 20 years of experience as a Registered Nurse working in acute care, community care, education, and nursing informatics. For over a decade, I have served as a Clinical Nurse Educator, supporting healthcare professionals and helping improve patient care. I later completed a Master's degree in Nursing Leadership and am currently pursuing a Doctor of Education in Organizational Leadership, focusing on healthcare administration and leadership development.

Beyond healthcare, I serve as a Naval Reservist with HMCS Discovery in the Royal Canadian Navy. Military service has strengthened my leadership, teamwork, resilience, and commitment to serving Canada. I am passionate about advancing inclusion, diversity, equity, and leadership opportunities for women and underrepresented groups. In recognition of my service and community contributions, I was honoured to receive the King Charles III Coronation Medal in 2024.

Which skills, knowledge, or experiences from KPU have been most valuable in your career so far?

When I reflect on my journey, KPU stands out as a place where I could truly be myself. It is more than a university. KPU is a welcoming community that supports students through every stage of life. KPU provided the foundation, confidence, and opportunities that helped me grow as a nurse, educator, military member, researcher, and community leader.

What advice would you give current KPU students who want to build a successful career after graduation?

My advice to current and future KPU students is to embrace every opportunity to learn, grow, and serve. The path may not always be easy, especially for newcomers with intersecting identifies, working professionals, and parents balancing multiple responsibilities. However, persistence, resilience, and a commitment to lifelong learning can open doors you never imagined possible.
