MAIMOONA RAHMAN

What brought you to KPU and your program of study?

I completed a Bachelor of Arts with a Double Minor in Criminology and Creative Writing. As someone who's always been drawn to the intricacies of law and crime but also a natural poet at heart, I decided to pursue both fields. I came to KPU because I wanted an educational experience that felt personal and rooted in connection with my community. The smaller class sizes at KPU allowed me to build such incredible relationships and connections with my amazing instructors and peers who not only inspired me but supported me to reach my potential.

Can you briefly describe your current position and your main day to day responsibilities?

After I completed my undergrad at KPU, I was accepted into UBC's Bachelor of Education program and successfully completed the program in the Summer of 2025 as a Certified Teacher. As I write this sentence, I have officially completed my first school year as a Teacher on Call in the largest school district in British Columbia! My responsibilities vary, but since I prefer to work in Elementary classrooms, my day to day responsibilities consist of managing classrooms, teaching various subjects (Art is always my favorite), and creating a space where all students feel welcome.

Which skills, knowledge, or experiences from KPU have been most valuable in your career so far?

My experience at KPU was enriching, exciting, and unforgettable. The University equipped me with the skills to be more creative, confident, ambitious, and courageous in all aspects of life. I was able to balance my course work in the manageable smaller classes, volunteer with university clubs in leadership roles, and grow as an individual. My teaching philosophy blooms from a place of inclusivity, compassion, and creativity, and much of that was shaped during my time at KPU.

What advice would you give current KPU students who want to build a successful career after graduation?

My advice to current students would be to really grasp every opportunity you have to grow both within the class and outside of it. Strive to build those meaningful connections with faculty, fellow students, and professors. Try to give back in different ways, get involved in volunteer work through student clubs or non-profit organizations in your community. These experiences can help you build confidence and cultivate useful skills that can benefit you in your future career. Oh and don't forget to ask for reference letters! :)
