KURTIS STEVENSON (He/him)
Graphic Design for Marketing - 2022
What brought you to KPU and your program of study?
When I originally looked into the Graphic Design for Marketing program, it was because I had started my educational career in Architectural Drafting. During my Architectural Drafting certificate, I realized I had a knack for textures, colours, pairings, and the creative side of design, but math was my downfall. With my extensive artistic background and some education in design and architecture, I decided to make the switch to Graphic Design.
Can you briefly describe your current position and your main day to day responsibilities?
After graduating from the Wilson School of Design’s GDMA program, I quickly launched my career as a freelance graphic designer. I have now successfully operated my own freelance graphic design studio for over three years, taking on a wide variety of client projects. My work has included websites, social media platforms, logos and branding, marketing collateral, and unique one-off projects such as wedding materials and custom print designs.

Which skills, knowledge, or experiences from KPU have been most valuable in your career so far?
The most valuable things I learned in the GDMA program were time management, project management, and the ability to effectively digest and interpret design briefs in order to execute projects accurately. These skills have been invaluable in helping me manage client expectations, stay organized, and deliver successful design solutions that meet project objectives.
What advice would you give current KPU students who want to build a successful career after graduation?
My advice to future graduates would be to go against the grain. There’s often a narrative about what people expect you to do after graduation: follow in someone else’s footsteps, get a junior position, and slowly work your way up. But I encourage you to consider the opposite. Start your own thing, build a name for yourself, and prove your knowledge, skills, and capabilities through your work. Take risks, create opportunities, and focus on building something that reflects your vision and leaves a lasting legacy.
