What brought you to KPU and your program of study?

Prior to studying at Kwantlen Polytechnic University, I was a registered nurse in the Philippines. For me to be able to practice my profession in Canada, I was required to take the GNIE (Graduate Nurse, Internationally Educated) course. It was actually my uncle who recommended and brought me to KPU. He told me a lot of amazing things about Kwantlen University like the quality of education it offers and the values that the students acquire through its programs which is vital and useful for their career in the future.

Can you briefly describe your current position and your main day to day responsibilities?

Currently, I am still a practicing registered nurse at a long-term care facility in Mississauga, Ontario. My primary day to day responsibility involves making sure that I provide the best quality care to my patients guided by the College of Nurses of Ontario’s standards of nursing practice, which leads to patient satisfaction and giving a sense of value and belonging, a home away from home.

Which skills, knowledge, or experiences from KPU have been most valuable in your career so far?

As a registered nurse coming from the Philippines, I already have the necessary skills to perform my nursing duties and responsibilities. Taking the GNIE course at KPU greatly enhanced my existing skills and knowledge, which includes critical thinking and problem solving, teamwork, ethics and professionalism, attention to details, most especially communication skills and relevant knowledge conforming to Canadian nursing practice.

What advice would you give current KPU students who want to build a successful career after graduation?

Nursing for me is more than just a profession -- it’s a “way of life”. Skills can be learned but the love for your craft, attitude, and the way you treat people will have a bigger impact in people’s lives.
