What brought you to KPU and your program of study?

I started Creative Writing at Capilano and completed it at Kwantlen, trying to give myself as much breadth and exposure as I could.

Can you briefly describe your current position and your main day to day responsibilities?

I am the Student Service manager for Chemical and Biological Engineering at UBC. Among much else I provide guidance and assistance to the Director of Academic Programs, Administration and Facilities and approximately 150 graduate students and 250 undergraduate students. That includes management of undergraduate and graduate student programs, curricula and student activities within the Department; Department accreditation from the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB), community and industry engagement and student recruitment activities. Systems and processes to support students and programs.

Which skills, knowledge, or experiences from KPU have been most valuable in your career so far?

To be honest time management was key. But like most programs, learning to share and be fair with people across diverse backgrounds was of equal importance. In creative writing we have to be harsh critics of ourselves and others but need to be able to do so constructively and kindly.

What advice would you give current KPU students who want to build a successful career after graduation?

The real work starts once you graduate. Enjoy your time in school but build the work habits you will need to be successful out of school. Show-up and don't give up!
