Accounting - 2015

What brought you to KPU and your program of study?

I chose KPU because of its strong reputation for practical, career-oriented education and its close connection to the local business community. Being from Surrey, it was important for me to attend a university that emphasized applied learning while still providing a strong academic foundation.

The Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting attracted me because it combined technical accounting with a broader understanding of business strategy and operations. KPU’s hands-on approach helped me build both technical and analytical skills early on.

Importantly, KPU also created a pathway for me to continue my professional development. It gave me the foundation to pursue my Master of Professional Accounting and ultimately earn my CPA designation, which has been instrumental in my career progression into executive finance leadership roles.

Can you briefly describe your current position and your main day to day responsibilities?

I currently serve as Vice President, Finance, where I lead the full spectrum of finance operations for a large national organization, including financial reporting, M&A, risk management, tax, and strategic planning.

On a day-to-day basis, I work closely with executive leadership to drive strategic initiatives, oversee financial performance, and support decision-making with data-driven insights. I’m also heavily involved in acquisitions, due diligence, and financing activities, as well as large-scale transformation initiatives such as ERP implementations and digital reporting enhancements.

In addition, I lead and mentor a large finance team, ensuring strong internal controls, governance, and continuous improvement across the organization.

Which skills, knowledge, or experiences from KPU have been most valuable in your career so far?

Several areas from KPU have had a lasting impact on my career. First, the strong technical accounting foundation gave me the confidence to pursue my CPA designation and succeed in audit and corporate finance roles.

Second, the emphasis on real-world application and critical thinking helped me develop problem-solving skills that are essential in complex environments like M&A, restructuring, and strategic planning.

Finally, KPU helped me build a well-rounded business perspective—not just accounting—which has been critical in leadership roles. This broader mindset has enabled me to translate financial information into actionable insights and contribute meaningfully at the executive and board level.

What advice would you give current KPU students who want to build a successful career after graduation?

My biggest advice is to focus on building both technical expertise and a strong business mindset early in your career. Take full advantage of KPU’s practical learning environment—seek internships, engage with instructors, and apply what you learn in real-world settings.

Second, be intentional about your professional path. For accounting students, pursuing advanced education like a Master’s degree and obtaining your CPA designation can significantly accelerate your career progression and open doors to leadership opportunities.

Finally, invest in relationships and continuous learning. Your network, adaptability, and willingness to take on new challenges will be just as important as your technical skills in the long run.

KPU provides an excellent foundation—but it’s how you build on that foundation through further education, professional designations, and experience that will ultimately define your success.
