DANIEL BUCYK
Business Administration - 2014
What brought you to KPU and your program of study?
I chose Kwantlen Polytechnic University because I wanted a practical, hands-on business education that would prepare me for a career in leadership. The Entrepreneurial Leadership program stood out because it combined business fundamentals with leadership development, problem-solving, and real-world application. At the time, I was looking to build a strong foundation that would help me succeed professionally, and the skills and experiences I gained through the program played an important role in launching what has become a successful career in sales and leadership.
Can you briefly describe your current position and your main day to day responsibilities?
I am the General Manager for Western Canada, leading a team of engineers and sales professionals across the region. My responsibilities include developing and executing regional sales strategies, driving revenue growth, and building and maintaining strong relationships with key customers and supplier partners within the electronic components distribution industry-one of the fastest-growing sectors globally, driven by demand in areas such as AI, automotive electrification, industrial automation, and advanced electronics. On a day-to-day basis, I focus on coaching and developing my team, managing performance and forecasting, identifying new business opportunities, and ensuring alignment across internal and external stakeholders. I also work closely with suppliers and customers to support strategic initiatives and deliver long-term value through a highly competitive and rapidly evolving market globally.
Which skills, knowledge, or experiences from KPU have been most valuable in your career so far?
One of the most valuable experiences from KPU was the practicum within the ENTR program, which provided me with early, hands-on exposure to real business environments. It helped bridge the gap between academic theory and practical application, particularly in areas like communication, problem-solving, and professional accountability.
In addition, the Entrepreneurial Leadership program strengthened my foundation in business fundamentals, teamwork, and leadership principles. These experiences collectively helped me develop the confidence and skill set needed to transition into a career in sales and leadership. They also taught me how to think critically, adapt to different situations, and work effectively with others-skills that have been directly applicable throughout my career progression.
What advice would you give current KPU students who want to build a successful career after graduation?
My advice to current KPU students would be to take full advantage of every opportunity to gain real-world experience while still in school. The ENTR practicum was especially valuable for me, as it provided early exposure to a professional environment and helped bridge the gap between academic learning and a career in business.
I would also encourage students to be proactive about building relationships, networking with peers, professors, and industry professionals, and seeking out mentorship wherever possible. In addition, developing strong communication, accountability, and adaptability skills early on can make a significant difference when transitioning into the workforce.
Most importantly, I would recommend staying open to opportunities that may not seem perfectly aligned at first, as many of the most valuable career experiences come from stepping outside your comfort zone and continuously learning along the way.
